Hardwood Floor Refinishing in Berlin, CT: Transforming a Worn Floor With a Natural Water-Based Finish

Sometimes the best hardwood floor transformations start with a floor that simply looks like it's had enough.

That's what we found on a recent hardwood floor refinishing project in Berlin, Connecticut.

The existing hardwood was old, worn and weathered. Years of use had taken away much of the clean natural appearance that makes hardwood so beautiful in the first place.

But underneath that worn finish was still a floor worth saving.

We professionally sanded the hardwood back to raw wood and completely transformed its appearance using Bona NaturalSeal followed by three coats of Bona Mega.

The final result?

A lighter, cleaner and much more natural-looking hardwood floor.

Sometimes the Wood Isn't the Problem

This is something we've seen thousands of times over the years.

Homeowners look at a badly worn floor and think the hardwood itself has become ugly.

But often they're looking at years of wear, scratches, discoloration and an aging finish—not the true appearance of the wood underneath.

That's why the sanding stage can be so dramatic.

As we began removing the old finish on this Berlin project, the tired appearance started disappearing.

Keeping the Look Natural With Bona NaturalSeal

Once the floor was properly sanded and prepared, the homeowners wanted to keep the new appearance light and natural.

For this project, we applied Bona NaturalSeal.

NaturalSeal is a waterborne sealer designed to help maintain more of the appearance of freshly sanded wood rather than introducing the stronger amber coloration associated with a traditional oil-based finishing system.

That made it a great fit for what we were trying to accomplish here.

We weren't trying to turn this into a dark floor.

We weren't trying to hide the grain underneath a heavy color.

We wanted the wood to look like wood.

NaturalSeal helped us move in that direction.

Three Coats of Bona Mega

After the NaturalSeal, we applied three coats of Bona Mega waterborne finish.

That gave us the protective finishing system the floor needed while maintaining the lighter overall appearance the homeowners wanted.

This is one of the advantages homeowners have today.

There isn't just one way to finish hardwood.

Some of our customers want the traditional warmth and amber appearance of oil-based polyurethane.

Others want a stained floor.

And increasingly, we're meeting homeowners who love the appearance of freshly sanded raw wood and ask:

“Can you keep it looking close to this?”

Today's waterborne sealers and finishes give us much better options for creating that type of appearance.

Look at the Before and After

This Berlin project is another one where the photographs really tell the story.

Look at the floor before sanding.

Worn. Weathered. Tired.

Then look at the finished hardwood after NaturalSeal and the Bona Mega system.

Bright. Clean. Natural.

It's difficult to believe you're looking at the same floor.

That's why we don't automatically recommend replacing an older hardwood floor simply because its appearance has deteriorated.

If there's enough usable hardwood remaining and the floor is otherwise a good candidate for refinishing, professional sanding may reveal something completely different underneath.

Berlin Has Changed a Lot—But Its History Is Still Everywhere

We've done hardwood flooring projects throughout Berlin, Kensington and East Berlin, and it's an interesting town because old Connecticut and modern Connecticut sit right next to each other.

Most people driving through the area today probably know the Berlin Turnpike, with its long stretch of stores, restaurants, shopping centers and businesses.

There's Brickyard Plaza along that busy retail corridor, and shopping has been part of the modern identity of the Turnpike for generations.

But drive away from the commercial corridor and you find a completely different Berlin.

There's the historic Worthington Ridge, once known as Berlin Street and part of the old Boston Post Road traveled by stagecoaches between New York and Boston. Berlin's historic district along the Ridge contains homes representing more than two centuries of the town's architecture.

The Worthington Meetinghouse, dating to 1774, remains one of the community's recognizable historic buildings.

And there's Berlin Fair Grounds, home of the Berlin Fair, whose roots in town go back to a harvest festival organized in the 1880s.

From Yankee Peddlers to Ragged Mountain

Berlin also played an interesting role in Connecticut's early manufacturing history.

In the 1740s, the Pattison family established a tinware business here. The Berlin Historical Society describes the Pattisons as pioneers of the American tin industry and early Yankee Peddlers, traveling to sell their products.

For people who know Berlin for the outdoors rather than its industry, there's also Ragged Mountain, part of the Metacomet Ridge, with trails and rocky overlooks near the Berlin-Southington line. Berlin's trail information describes a loop to Ragged Mountain with exposed ledges and views over the surrounding area.

That's what makes Berlin interesting.

Historic houses. Established neighborhoods. Shopping along the Turnpike. Farms, trails and open space.
