Hardwood Floor Repair & Refinishing in West Hartford, CT: Giving Red Oak a Fresh Start

A new homeowner in West Hartford recently called us after discovering that the hardwood floors in their new home needed more attention than they originally expected.

Near a sliding door, years of leaking moisture had caused several red oak boards to deteriorate and rot. There were also damaged areas between two rooms that needed to be repaired before we could begin refinishing.

Repair First, Refinish Second

Before sanding, we removed the damaged flooring and carefully installed replacement red oak boards, blending the repairs into the existing floor.

This is an important part of hardwood floor refinishing that homeowners don't always see. Sanding and finish can dramatically improve an older floor, but damaged or rotted boards need to be properly repaired first.

Once the repairs were complete, we sanded the old finish away and brought the red oak back to clean, bare wood.

A Lighter, More Natural Red Oak Floor

The homeowners wanted to get away from the older, dated appearance and bring out the natural beauty of the red oak.

We applied Bona NaturalSeal, followed by Bona Mega water-based finish. NaturalSeal helped maintain the lighter, natural appearance of the freshly sanded red oak without adding the heavy amber and orange tones associated with traditional oil-based polyurethane.

The difference was tremendous. What started with rotted boards, damaged areas and a tired old finish became a clean, bright hardwood floor ready for the homeowners to enjoy.
