Bamboo Floor Refinishing in Union & Ashford, CT: Bringing a Unique Floor Back to Life
Not every floor we sand is oak, maple or pine.
Every once in a while, we get a project that requires a completely different approach.
This bamboo floor refinishing project in Union, Connecticut 06076, near Ashford 06278, was one of those jobs.
The home had an existing bamboo floor that needed to be re-sanded and refinished. Bamboo can be a little more complicated to work with than a traditional hardwood floor because it doesn't always sand or react the same way as oak.
As we removed the old finish, the coating had a tendency to peel away during the sanding process, so we had to adjust our sanding approach and work carefully with tighter-grit paper as the floor progressed.
Once we had the surface properly prepared, we applied Bona IntenseSeal followed by Bona Mega waterborne finish.
The transformation was beautiful.
The old floor brightened dramatically, and once the previous coating was removed, you could once again appreciate one of the features that makes bamboo so interesting:
Look closely and you can actually see the natural knuckles—or nodes—in the bamboo.
Bamboo Isn't an Ordinary Hardwood Floor
Although we commonly talk about bamboo alongside hardwood flooring, bamboo is technically a grass rather than a conventional hardwood species.
That doesn't mean it can't make a beautiful floor.
It does mean you need to understand what you're working with before putting a sanding machine on it.
Manufactured bamboo flooring can vary considerably in construction, density and surface treatment. That means we don't assume every bamboo floor should be approached exactly the same way.
On this Union project, sanding required additional attention because the old surface coating didn't simply powder away the way you might expect on some conventional wood floors.
It could peel as we worked.
That meant controlling the sanding process, changing abrasives appropriately and being careful not to become unnecessarily aggressive with the floor.
Different material. Different sanding characteristics. Different approach.
Bringing the Natural Bamboo Character Back
One of the things we liked most about this project was what began appearing as the old finish came off.
The bamboo itself became much more visible.
Bamboo has distinctive natural nodes along the stalk. On a bamboo floor, those can appear as small knuckle-like markings across the individual pieces.
Those markings are part of what separates bamboo visually from a traditional oak or maple floor.
We didn't want to bury them.
We wanted the refinishing process to clean and brighten the floor while allowing those natural characteristics to remain visible.
When you look closely at the completed floor, you can still see those bamboo knuckles.
That's not a defect. That's the character of the material.
Bona IntenseSeal and Mega Waterborne Finish
After the sanding was complete and the floor was properly prepared, we moved into the finishing stage.
For this particular bamboo floor, we used a waterborne system consisting of Bona IntenseSeal followed by Bona Mega finish.
The water-based direction worked beautifully for this project.
Rather than introducing the stronger ambering associated with a traditional oil-based polyurethane system, it helped us keep the finished appearance cleaner and brighter.
The result was exactly the kind of transformation we were hoping to see.
The room brightened.
The bamboo looked cleaner.
The individual pieces became more distinct.
And the natural structure of the bamboo became part of the appearance again.
Why Bamboo Refinishing Needs to Be Evaluated First
Just as with engineered hardwood flooring, we don't believe in telling homeowners that every bamboo floor can automatically be sanded.
There are different types of bamboo flooring and different methods of manufacturing it.
The existing condition matters.
The construction matters.
Previous sanding matters.
And the coating already on the floor matters.
That's why the first step is evaluating what is actually there.
Once we determined that this Union floor was a suitable candidate, we could develop the sanding and finishing approach around the floor in front of us.
The machine doesn't make that decision. Experience does.

The result came out beautifully.
And when you look closely, you can still see those little knuckles running through the bamboo.
That's one of our favorite parts of the finished floor.
We didn't try to make bamboo look like oak.
We brought the bamboo back so it could look like bamboo again.
