Burlington, CT Pine Floor Refinishing — From Dog Damage and Dark Stain to a Beautiful Natural Finish
Hardwood Floor Repairs, Wide Pine Floor Sanding, and Bona NordicSeal Near Johnnycake Mountain
A Beautiful Burlington Home That Needed a Fresh Look
One of our more unusual hardwood flooring projects took place in Burlington, Connecticut, in the Johnnycake Mountain neighborhood.
The homeowners were preparing to list their house for sale and wanted to improve the appearance of their floors. But when they called, they described something I don't hear every day.
Their dog had been chewing on the wood floors and stair treads.
I decided this was something I needed to see for myself.
When I visited the home, I found several damaged areas where the dog had chewed into the pine flooring. The floors also had an older, darker finish that made the rooms look dated.
This was a beautiful home, but the flooring wasn't showing it at its best.
I suggested that instead of simply restoring the original dark appearance, we consider something brighter and more natural that would complement the home and appeal to prospective buyers.
Repairing the Damage Before Refinishing
This wasn't a typical sanding job.
Some areas required additional attention because of the depth of the chewing damage. We made an initial visit to prepare and fill damaged sections, then returned to sand those repairs further as part of the complete refinishing process.
Proper preparation was important because we wanted the repaired areas to blend with the surrounding pine rather than draw attention to the damage.
The homeowners also wanted to see different finish options before making a final decision.
I prepared samples showing a color closer to the existing floor and a much lighter, natural-looking alternative.
I explained that a water-based finish with Bona NordicSeal could create a brighter appearance, closer to the look of freshly sanded wood.
They decided to move away from the old dark finish.
Bona NordicSeal and Mega Give the Home a New Appearance
Once the repairs were prepared, our crew professionally sanded the pine floors using dust-containment equipment.
We applied Bona NordicSeal followed by Bona Mega water-based polyurethane, giving the flooring a dramatically lighter appearance.
The transformation was remarkable.
Instead of the old amber-brown look, the pine now had a bright, natural appearance that highlighted its knots, grain patterns, and wide boards.
The lighter floors also worked beautifully with the home's gray walls, white trim, and fireplace.
It made the interior feel much more up to date without removing the original wood flooring.
Refinishing the Pine Stair Treads
The project also involved the home's staircase, where the dog had damaged portions of the wood.
We worked on the stair treads as part of the restoration, bringing them closer to the lighter appearance of the surrounding floors.
The finished pine treads, white risers, and traditional wood railing helped tie the spaces together.
Preparing a Home for Sale With Hardwood Floor Refinishing
This Burlington project shows how much difference refinishing can make when preparing a house for sale.
Instead of replacing the original pine flooring, we repaired the damaged sections, removed the old dark finish, and created a brighter appearance throughout the home.
The transformation preserved the character of the wood while making the rooms feel more modern.
For homeowners considering selling, hardwood floor refinishing can be an important part of preparing a property for prospective buyers.
