Hardwood Floor Refinishing at Roaring Brook Nature Center in Canton, CT
Canton, Connecticut 06019 | Roaring Brook Nature Center
Some hardwood floor refinishing projects in Canton, Connecticut are memorable because of the floor. Others are memorable because of where we're working.
This project had both.
We were asked to come into the Roaring Brook Nature Center in Canton, CT 06019 to restore the wood floor in one of the center's exhibit areas. This isn't simply an ordinary showroom. It's an active nature center where children and families can come in and see live animals and learn about Connecticut wildlife.
That also means the floor sees plenty of activity.
Years of use had left the old yellow pine flooring heavily worn, dull and dirty-looking. The original color had lost much of its definition, and the surface no longer showed off the beautiful grain and character that was still underneath.
Our job was to bring it back.
A Heavily Worn Yellow Pine Floor
The first photograph tells the story particularly well.
You can see the dark, worn existing floor across most of the room, while the section on the left had already begun to be sanded.
That contrast shows exactly what professional wood floor refinishing can uncover.
Underneath the tired surface was yellow pine with tremendous character. The long boards and strong grain pattern were still there; they had simply become hidden beneath years of wear, old finish and accumulated discoloration.
Because this was an active exhibit space, we also had to work carefully around the room and protect the surrounding areas while completing the sanding and finishing process.
Sanding the Floor Back to Clean Wood
The first step was to remove the worn finish and bring the yellow pine back to properly prepared wood.
Pine requires experience when sanding. It is softer than oak, and the sanding process has to be controlled so that the surface remains flat and the character of the boards isn't damaged.
Using our professional dust-containment sanding equipment, we worked through the floor until the deteriorated surface and old finish were removed.
As more of the floor was exposed, the natural grain became increasingly visible.
And that grain became one of the best features of the finished project.
Creating a Custom DuraSeal Stain Color
The Nature Center didn't want to completely change the character of the room.
They wanted a color that would complement the appearance they already had while making the floor look clean, refreshed and intentional again.
Instead of simply choosing a standard color and putting it down, we developed a custom DuraSeal stain color for this particular yellow pine floor.
That was important because pine accepts stain very differently from oak. Its grain and natural variations can create a tremendous amount of movement once stain is applied.
The goal wasn't to make every board look identical.
It was to create a color that worked with the existing wood-paneled surroundings while allowing the distinctive grain of the old yellow pine to become part of the room again.
The Yellow Pine Comes Back to Life
This closer photograph really shows what made the finished floor special.
Instead of the dull, worn surface we started with, you can now see the individual grain patterns running through the pine. The darker custom stain settles into the grain while the lighter portions of the boards provide contrast.
The floor still looks appropriate for the rustic character of the Nature Center, but now it looks restored rather than worn out.
That's an important distinction on an older wood floor.
Refinishing doesn't necessarily mean making an old floor look brand new. Sometimes the better result is preserving its character while removing the years of wear that were hiding it.
Bona Traffic HD for a Busy Exhibit Area
After achieving the color we wanted, we needed to protect it.
For this project, we used Bona Traffic HD water-based finish.
That was an especially appropriate choice for an active area like this because the floor needed a professional finish designed to stand up to substantial use. Traffic HD also allowed us to protect the custom stain without creating the heavier ambering associated with traditional oil-based polyurethane.
The result was a floor that retained the rich custom color while giving the Nature Center the durability needed for a busy public space.
A Completely Different Appearance Without Losing the Building's Character
When you compare the finished photographs with where we started, it's a substantial transformation.
The floor hasn't lost the rustic character that belongs in this building. In fact, refinishing it made that character more noticeable.
The custom color works beautifully with the surrounding wood walls, ceiling and exposed beams, while the newly refinished floor has its own distinct appearance.
Most importantly, the old dirty and heavily worn look is gone.
The floor is clean, protected and ready to continue serving an area where families and children can enjoy the live-animal exhibits at the Nature Center.
Hardwood Floor Refinishing in Canton, Connecticut 06019
At Patrick Daigle Hardwood Flooring, our work ranges from residential hardwood floor refinishing and wood floor refinishing to larger commercial and public spaces throughout Connecticut.
This project at Roaring Brook Nature Center in Canton, CT 06019 is a great example of what can be accomplished with an older pine floor.
Rather than replacing a floor simply because it had become badly worn, we were able to sand it back to clean wood, create a custom DuraSeal color that complemented the building, and protect it with Bona Traffic HD water-based finish.
After four generations in the hardwood flooring trade, we still enjoy projects where an old floor has enough character that it deserves to be preserved.
This Canton yellow pine floor certainly did.
