Manchester, CT Hardwood Floor Refinishing — From Dark Stain to Beautiful Natural Oak
A Hardwood Floor Refinishing Project in Manchester's Deepwood Neighborhood
Sometimes homeowners call us because their hardwood floors are worn and need refinishing. Other times, they call because a recent refinishing project didn't turn out the way they expected.
That was the situation with this homeowner in the Deepwood section of Manchester, Connecticut.
The homeowner originally contacted Patrick Daigle Hardwood Flooring to ask if I would inspect another contractor's work. That's something I don't normally do, and I initially encouraged him to work directly with the original contractor.
The project had been part of an insurance claim, and the homeowner wasn't happy with the process or the finished appearance. After several conversations and an unsuccessful attempt by the original contractor to address his concerns, I agreed to stop by.
Since our family business is based right here in Manchester, I wanted to see whether we could help.
The Problem: Dark Stain and Visible Sanding Marks
When I examined the floors, the first thing we discussed was the stain color.
The homeowner felt the floors were much too dark.
I asked whether anyone had discussed a natural, water-based finish as an alternative. He told me that option had never been presented to him.
I also noticed what appeared to be considerable machine chatter in the living room, along with visible scratches in the stained surface.
Some sanding marks can become more noticeable when stain is applied, particularly on a site-finished hardwood floor. But the overall appearance wasn't what this homeowner had expected.
We discussed removing the dark stain and bringing the floors back to a lighter, more natural appearance.
Removing the Stain Revealed Something Interesting
Our crew used professional dust-containment sanding equipment to remove the existing stain and prepare the hardwood floors for refinishing.
Once the stain was removed, we discovered something that hadn't been as noticeable under the darker color.
The floors contained a mixture of red oak and white oak.
These two oak species have different grain patterns and natural color characteristics. With the dark stain removed, those differences became much easier to see.
Rather than covering the wood with another dark stain, we recommended keeping the natural appearance.
We applied a clear Bona sealer followed by Bona Mega water-based polyurethane.
This gave the floors a brighter appearance and allowed the natural characteristics of both oak species to show.
A Brighter, More Natural Hardwood Floor
The finished floors looked dramatically different.
Instead of the darker stained appearance, the homeowner now had a lighter floor that showed the natural grain and color variations of the wood.
The combination of red oak and white oak is especially noticeable in the completed photographs.
It's a good example of why discussing stain and finish options before refinishing is so important.
Not every homeowner wants a stained floor. Sometimes a clear, natural-looking water-based finish is exactly what the home needs.
